The cost of production and processing in Nigeria is estimated at 104 US dollars per ton, compared to only 21 US dollars per ton in Thailand . This significant cost differential highlights the inefficiencies in the Nigerian cassava processing and marketing system, which are rooted in outdated processing technologies, inadequate infrastructure, limited access to credit, and the predominance of small-scale, informal processing operations.

Kogi State, located in the North-Central geopolitical zone of Nigeria, is one of the country’s leading cassava-producing states. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Kogi State accounts for over 16% of Nigeria’s total cassava output, with more than 3.3 million metric tons produced annually . This has earned the state recognition as a cassava belt, with significant implications for agro-processing, food security, and raw material supply for numerous industries. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

While Kogi State accounts for over 16% of Nigeria’s total cassava output, with more than 3.3 million metric tons produced annually , the full economic potential of this production remains largely unrealized due to constraints in processing, value addition, and marketing.

The first and most fundamental problem is the low level of value addition in cassava processing in Kogi State. Most cassava processors in the state adopt traditional, labour-intensive processing methods that are inefficient, time-consuming, and result in products of variable quality . Geographically, the study covers Kogi East Senatorial District of Kogi State, which is one of the major cassava-producing areas in the state. This coverage ensures that the study captures the diversity of cassava processing and marketing activities in the state’s major cassava-producing region. The selection of Kogi East Senatorial District is justified by its prominence in cassava production and the concentration of processing and marketing activities in the area .

Conceptually, the study examines the economics of cassava processing and marketing, including the socioeconomic characteristics of processors and marketers, the processing and marketing channels adopted, the profitability of cassava enterprises, the factors influencing output and profit, and the constraints facing the sector. The study covers three major cassava products: garri, cassava flour, and fufu, which are the most commonly processed and marketed products in the study area .

The study focuses on small-scale cassava processors and marketers operating in the informal sector, who constitute the majority of actors in the cassava value chain in Kogi State. The study employs descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis, profit function analysis, and likert scale rating techniques to analyze the data . These analytical techniques are appropriate for describing the characteristics of respondents, identifying the factors influencing output and profit, assessing profitability, and ranking the seriousness of constraints.

1.9 Limitation of the Study

The study acknowledges several limitations that may affect the interpretation and generalizability of the findings.

The first limitation relates to the geographical scope of the study. While the study covers Kogi East Senatorial District, the findings may not be generalizable to other parts of Kogi State or to other states with different cassava value chains and socioeconomic contexts. The specific conditions in Kogi East Senatorial District, including its agro-ecological characteristics, infrastructure, and institutional context, may differ from those in other areas of the state, limiting the applicability of the findings. However, the selection of Kogi East Senatorial District, which is one of the major cassava-producing areas in the state, enhances the relevance of the findings for the broader cassava sector in Kogi State.

The study is also limited by the sampling technique employed. While efforts were made to select a representative sample of 120 cassava processors and marketers using a multistage sampling technique , the sample size may not fully capture the diversity of cassava processing and marketing enterprises in the study area. The study may not adequately represent certain categories of processors and marketers, such as those in remote areas or those engaged in processing less common cassava products, due to sampling constraints. However, the sample size of 120 respondents is consistent with similar studies in the field and provides a reasonable basis for analysis.

The reliance on primary data collected through structured questionnaires presents several limitations. Respondents may not accurately recall or report information on their processing and marketing activities, costs, revenues, and constraints. Self-reporting bias may affect the accuracy of the data and the validity of the findings. To address this limitation, the study employed careful questionnaire design, trained enumerators, and triangulation with secondary data sources where possible. The use of multiple analytical techniques also helps to validate the findings.

The study is limited by the cross-sectional nature of the research design. The data were collected at a single point in time, capturing the situation of cassava processors and marketers at that particular moment. This design does not capture seasonal variations in processing and marketing activities, changes in enterprise performance over time, or the dynamic effects of policy interventions. A longitudinal study that follows processors and marketers over a period of time would provide richer insights into the economics of cassava processing and marketing, but such a design was beyond the scope of this study.

The study is also limited by the challenge of measuring profitability and efficiency in small-scale, informal enterprises. Many processors and marketers do not keep formal financial records, making it difficult to accurately estimate costs, revenues, and profits. The study relied on respondents’ recall and estimates, which may be subject to error. The use of profit function analysis helps to address this limitation by estimating profitability based on reported costs and revenues, but the accuracy of the estimates depends on the quality of the data provided by respondents.

The study acknowledges the challenge of isolating the effects of specific factors on enterprise performance. The profitability of cassava processing and marketing enterprises is influenced by multiple factors, including socioeconomic characteristics, processing methods, market conditions, infrastructure, and institutional support. Isolating the specific effects of individual factors is challenging, and the study may not fully capture the complexity of the relationships. The study attempted to address this limitation by using multiple regression analysis to identify the significant factors influencing output and profit, but the analysis may not capture all relevant factors.

The study is limited by the available time and resources for data collection and analysis. While the study aimed to provide comprehensive coverage of the topic, the scope and depth of the analysis were constrained by the resources available. A more extensive study with a larger sample size, more detailed data collection, and longer time frame would provide more robust findings and richer insights into the economics of cassava processing and marketing.

The study is limited by the potential for researcher bias in the interpretation and analysis of the data. Despite efforts to maintain objectivity, the researcher’s own experiences, values, and perspectives may have influenced the research process, including the selection of variables, the interpretation of findings, and the formulation of recommendations. To minimize this bias, the study employed objective analytical techniques and sought input from peers and experts in agricultural economics and value chain analysis.

1.10 Definition of Terms

Cassava: A perennial woody shrub of the Euphorbiaceae family, cultivated for its starchy tuberous roots, which serve as a major source of dietary energy and are processed into various products including garri, cassava flour, fufu, starch, and other cassava-based products.

Cassava Flour (Alibo): A processed cassava product obtained by peeling, washing, soaking, sifting, dewatering, molding, and drying cassava roots, resulting in a fine, white, flour-like product used for making various food preparations.

Economic Analysis: The systematic examination of the economic aspects of cassava processing and marketing, including the assessment of costs, revenues, profitability, efficiency, and the factors influencing enterprise performance.

Fufu: A processed cassava product obtained by peeling, washing, soaking, fermenting, sifting, dewatering, boiling, and molding cassava roots, resulting in a fermented, starchy product that is cooked and consumed as a staple food.

Garri: The most commonly processed cassava product in Nigeria, obtained by peeling, washing, grating, dehydrating, fermenting, and frying cassava roots, resulting in a granular, fermented, and roasted product that can be stored for extended periods.

Marketing Channel: The sequence of intermediaries through which a cassava product passes from the processor to the final consumer, including packaging, transportation, wholesaling, and retailing activities.

Post-Harvest Loss: The quantitative and qualitative losses that occur in cassava after harvest, including losses during storage, processing, transportation, and marketing.

Processing Channel: The sequence of processing activities through which cassava roots are transformed into a final product, including peeling, washing, grating, fermentation, drying, and other activities specific to each product.

Profitability: The ability of a cassava processing or marketing enterprise to generate financial returns that exceed the costs of production, measured as the difference between total revenue and total costs.

Socioeconomic Characteristics: The demographic and economic attributes of cassava processors and marketers, including age, sex, marital status, level of education, family size, experience, and initial capital investment.

Value Addition: The process of transforming raw cassava roots into processed products that have higher value than the raw material, including the conversion of cassava into garri, cassava flour, fufu, starch, and other products.

Value Chain: The full range of activities required to bring cassava products from production through processing and marketing to final consumers, including input supply, production, processing, packaging, transportation, wholesaling, retailing, and consumption.
