CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Standard costing is a fundamental management accounting technique used by manufacturing companies to establish predetermined estimates of the costs of producing goods or services. These predetermined costs—known as standard costs—are set for each element of production, including direct materials, direct labor, and manufacturing overhead. Standard costs are based on engineering studies, historical data, industry benchmarks, and management expectations of efficient operating conditions. The primary purposes of standard costing include: (a) providing benchmarks against which actual costs can be compared, (b) facilitating variance analysis (the calculation and investigation of differences between actual and standard costs), (c) supporting budgeting and planning processes, (d) providing a basis for product pricing decisions, (e) assisting in inventory valuation, and (f) supporting performance evaluation of departments and managers. Standard costing transforms cost management from a reactive, historical exercise to a proactive, forward-looking discipline (Drury, 2020; Horngren, Sundem, and Stratton, 2018).

Nigerian Breweries Plc, with its Ama Plant located in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, is a premier manufacturing company in Nigeria’s beverage industry. Established in 1946, Nigerian Breweries is the pioneer and largest brewing company in Nigeria, with several production facilities across the country. The Ama Plant (sometimes referred to as the Enugu Brewery) is one of the company’s strategic production facilities, serving the southeastern and south-south markets. The plant produces several of the company’s iconic brands, including Star Lager, Gulder, Heineken (under license), Maltina, Amstel Malta, and other beverages. As a large-scale manufacturing operation, the Ama Plant faces significant cost management challenges: procuring raw materials (barley, sorghum, maize, hops), managing production processes (brewing, fermentation, packaging), controlling labor costs, maintaining quality standards, and optimizing distribution logistics. In this context, standard costing is an essential tool for cost control and profitability management (Nigerian Breweries Plc, 2023; Adebayo and Oyedokun, 2019).
The concept of standard costing involves several key elements. Standard material cost is the predetermined cost of raw materials required to produce one unit of product, calculated as the standard quantity of materials multiplied by the standard price per unit. Standard labor cost is the predetermined cost of direct labor required to produce one unit of product, calculated as the standard hours of labor multiplied by the standard wage rate. The historical performance of Nigerian Breweries Plc has been generally strong, with the company consistently reporting profits and paying dividends. However, the company has also faced challenges: intense competition, rising raw material costs, foreign exchange pressures, and changing consumer preferences (e.g., shift toward non-alcoholic beverages). The Ama Plant’s performance contributes to the overall profitability of the Nigerian Breweries group. Understanding how standard costing affects the plant’s profitability can provide insights for improving cost management across the brewing industry and manufacturing sector more broadly (Nigerian Breweries Plc, 2023; Okafor and Udeh, 2021).
Finally, this study focuses on Nigerian Breweries Plc’s Ama Plant in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State as a case study because it represents a large-scale, established manufacturing operation with complex cost structures. By examining the effects of standard costing on profitability at this plant, the study can generate insights that are applicable to other Nigerian manufacturing companies. The findings will contribute to the literature on management accounting in the Nigerian context and provide practical guidance for managers seeking to enhance profitability through improved cost control (Yin, 2018; Creswell and Creswell, 2018).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Nigerian Breweries Plc’s Ama Plant in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, like other manufacturing facilities, operates in a challenging environment characterized by volatile raw material prices, foreign exchange fluctuations, intense competition, and rising operational costs. Profitability pressures are significant, and effective cost management is essential for maintaining the plant’s financial performance and the company’s overall competitiveness. Standard costing, as a management accounting technique, is intended to help manufacturing companies control costs by establishing cost benchmarks, identifying variances, and enabling corrective action. However, it is unclear how effectively standard costing is implemented at the Ama Plant and what effect it has on profitability. Preliminary observations suggest potential issues: standards may not be updated regularly to reflect current conditions; variance reports may not be produced or reviewed in a timely manner; management may not be using variance information for decision-making; favorable variances may be masking underlying problems (e.g., quality issues); and the cost of maintaining the standard costing system may not be justified by the benefits. There is a lack of recent, systematic, empirical research specifically examining the effects of standard costing on profitability at Nigerian Breweries Plc’s Ama Plant. Therefore, this study is motivated to investigate the effects of standard costing on the profitability of the Ama Plant, identify the factors that enhance or limit its effectiveness, and propose recommendations for improving cost management and profitability.
1.3 Aim of the Study
The aim of this study is to examine the effects of standard costing on the profitability of manufacturing companies, using Nigerian Breweries Plc, Ama Plant, in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, as a case study.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The specific objectives of this study are to:
- Examine the standard costing practices (setting of standards, variance analysis, reporting) at Nigerian Breweries Plc, Ama Plant.
- Assess the profitability trends of the Ama Plant over the study period using relevant financial metrics (gross profit margin, operating profit margin, return on assets).
- Determine the relationship between standard cost variances (material, labor, overhead) and profitability at the plant.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of management’s response to variance reports in improving cost control and profitability.
- Identify the challenges affecting the implementation of standard costing at the Ama Plant and propose recommendations for enhancing profitability.
1.5 Research Questions
The following research questions guide this study:

1.6 Research Hypotheses
The following hypotheses are formulated in null (H₀) and alternative (H₁) forms:
Hypothesis One
- H₀: Standard costing has no significant effect on the profitability of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Ama Plant.
- H₁: Standard costing has a significant effect on the profitability of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Ama Plant.
Hypothesis Two
- H₀: There is no significant relationship between material cost variances and gross profit margin at the Ama Plant.
- H₁: There is a significant relationship between material cost variances and gross profit margin at the Ama Plant.
Hypothesis Three
- H₀: Labor efficiency variances do not significantly affect the operating profit margin of the Ama Plant.
- H₁: Labor efficiency variances significantly affect the operating profit margin of the Ama Plant.
Hypothesis Four
- H₀: Management’s response to variance reports (timeliness, corrective action) has no significant effect on cost control and profitability at the Ama Plant.
- H₁: Management’s response to variance reports (timeliness, corrective action) has a significant effect on cost control and profitability at the Ama Plant.
1.7 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several stakeholders. First, the management and cost accounting department of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Ama Plant, will benefit from a systematic assessment of how standard costing affects profitability, enabling them to identify weaknesses, improve variance analysis, and enhance cost control. Second, other Nigerian Breweries Plc plants (and the corporate headquarters) will gain insights into best practices and challenges at the Ama Plant, supporting benchmarking and continuous improvement across the company. Third, other manufacturing companies in Nigeria, particularly those in the beverage, food processing, and consumer goods sectors, can use the findings as a benchmark for evaluating and improving their own standard costing systems. Fourth, the Nigerian Breweries group management will benefit from understanding how standard costing contributes to overall corporate profitability, supporting resource allocation and investment decisions. Fifth, professional accounting bodies (ICAN, ANAN, CIMA) will find value in the study’s identification of standard costing challenges and best practices in the Nigerian manufacturing context, informing training and CPD programs. Sixth, academics and researchers in management accounting, cost accounting, and manufacturing management will benefit from the study’s contribution to the literature on standard costing effectiveness in a real-world manufacturing setting. Seventh, students of accounting and management will find the study useful as a practical case study illustrating the application of standard costing concepts. Eighth, suppliers and business partners of Nigerian Breweries will benefit indirectly as improved cost management leads to greater stability and sustainability of the company. Finally, the broader Nigerian economy will benefit as improved cost management practices across the manufacturing sector lead to lower production costs, more competitive pricing, increased exports, and economic growth.
1.8 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the effects of standard costing on the profitability of manufacturing companies, using Nigerian Breweries Plc, Ama Plant, in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, as a case study. Geographically, the research is limited to the Ama Plant (Enugu Brewery) located in Udi Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria. The plant is one of the production facilities of Nigerian Breweries Plc, producing alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Content-wise, the study examines the following areas: standard costing practices (setting of material, labor, and overhead standards; variance analysis; reporting frequency and format); profitability metrics (gross profit margin, operating profit margin, net profit margin, return on assets); the relationship between variances and profitability; management’s response to variance reports (timeliness of review, corrective actions, accountability); and challenges (unreliable data, outdated standards, employee resistance, environmental factors). The study targets plant management (Plant Manager, Production Manager), cost accountants, finance staff, production supervisors, and quality control personnel. The time frame for data collection is the cross-sectional period of 2023–2024, though historical financial and production data (e.g., 3-5 years) will be analyzed. The study does not cover other Nigerian Breweries plants (except for comparative context), nor does it cover the company’s marketing, distribution, or administrative functions beyond their impact on plant-level profitability.
1.9 Definition of Terms

CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Conceptual Framework
A conceptual framework is a structural representation of the key concepts or variables in a study and the hypothesized relationships among them. It serves as the analytical lens through which the researcher organizes the study, selects appropriate methodology, and interprets findings. In this study, the conceptual framework is built around two primary constructs: Standard Costing (the independent variable) and Profitability (the dependent variable). Additionally, the framework identifies the specific dimensions of each construct and the mediating and moderating variables that influence the relationship (Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, 2020).
The independent variable, Standard Costing, refers to the management accounting technique that establishes predetermined estimates of the costs of producing goods or services, against which actual costs are compared to identify variances. For the purpose of this study, standard costing is conceptualized along six key dimensions: (a) setting of standards (establishing standard material, labor, and overhead costs based on engineering studies, historical data, and expected conditions), (b) material cost management (standard material prices and quantities, material price and quantity variances), (c) labor cost management (standard labor rates and hours, labor rate and efficiency variances), (d) overhead cost management (standard overhead rates, variable and fixed overhead variances), (e) variance analysis and reporting (calculation, investigation, and communication of variances to management), and (f) corrective action (management’s response to variances to improve cost control). Each dimension contributes differently to the overall effectiveness of standard costing and, consequently, to profitability (Drury, 2020; Horngren, Sundem, and Stratton, 2018).
The dependent variable, Profitability, refers to the ability of a business to generate earnings relative to its revenue, assets, or equity. Questions probe specific examples from Nigerian Breweries Plc’s Ama Plant experience. The framework also guides the analysis of secondary data, including production reports, cost accounting records, variance reports, and financial statements (Creswell and Creswell, 2018; Saunders, Lewis, and Thornhill, 2019).
Empirical studies that have employed similar conceptual frameworks in brewing and beverage manufacturing contexts provide validation for this approach. For example, studies on standard costing in European breweries found that material quantity variances (yield variances) were the strongest predictor of profitability, due to the high cost of raw materials (barley, hops). Studies on African breweries found that labor efficiency variances were less significant due to lower labor costs, while overhead variances (especially energy costs) were significant. In Nigeria, research on breweries has found that standard costing is widely used but that variance reporting is often delayed and management responsiveness is inconsistent. These findings support the relevance of the current framework for Nigerian Breweries Plc’s Ama Plant (Adebayo and Oyedokun, 2020; Eze and Nwafor, 2021; Okafor and Udeh, 2021).
