CHAPTER ONE
THE ROLE OF ACCOUNTANT IN THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF ORGANIZATION
(A STUDY OF NIGERIAN BOTTLING COMPANY, ONITSHA)
1.1 Background of the Study
Accountants play a fundamental role in the economic development of organizations by ensuring proper financial recording, analysis, and reporting of business activities. Their work supports planning, decision-making, budgeting, and control functions that directly influence organizational growth and sustainability. (Horngren, Sundem and Elliott, 2013; Meigs and Meigs, 2014).
In modern business environments, accounting has moved beyond basic record-keeping to become a strategic function that supports management in achieving organizational goals. Through accurate financial information, accountants help organizations improve efficiency, reduce waste, and maximize profitability. (Drury, 2015).
In companies such as Nigerian Bottling Company, accountants play a key role in ensuring financial discipline, compliance with accounting standards, and efficient allocation of resources, all of which contribute to economic development and organizational stability. (Adeniji, 2018).
Accounting as a profession has evolved significantly over the years from simple bookkeeping to a more complex system of financial management and strategic advisory roles. Historically, accountants were mainly responsible for recording financial transactions, but today they are key players in business decision-making and economic planning. (Meigs and Meigs, 2014).
The development of organizations depends largely on the availability of accurate financial information, which accountants are responsible for producing. Financial statements prepared by accountants help organizations understand their financial position and performance, enabling better planning and resource allocation. (Horngren et al., 2013).
In developing economies like Nigeria, accountants play an essential role in ensuring accountability and transparency in both private and public organizations. Their work helps to reduce corruption, improve financial discipline, and support economic growth. (Adeniji, 2018).
The Nigerian Bottling Company, a major player in the beverage industry, depends heavily on accountants to manage financial records, control costs, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. This contributes significantly to the organizationβs economic development and competitiveness in the market. (Drury, 2015).
Furthermore, globalization and technological advancement have expanded the role of accountants, requiring them to use accounting software and information systems to improve efficiency and accuracy in financial reporting. (Romney and Steinbart, 2018).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the important role of accountants in organizations, many businesses still experience financial mismanagement, inefficiencies, and poor decision-making due to inadequate utilization of accounting information. (Pandey, 2015).
Some organizations fail to recognize the strategic importance of accountants, limiting their role to routine record-keeping rather than involving them in management decision-making processes. This reduces their contribution to economic development. (Drury, 2015).
In some cases, inaccurate financial records, weak internal control systems, and lack of proper financial analysis hinder organizational growth and development. (Meigs and Meigs, 2014).
Additionally, poor integration of accountants into strategic planning processes affects the ability of organizations to achieve long-term economic stability and competitiveness. (Horngren et al., 2013).
It is against this background that this study examines the role of accountants in the economic development of organizations using Nigerian Bottling Company, Onitsha as a case study.

CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
2.0 Literature Review
This chapter reviews existing literature on the role of accountants in the economic development of organizations. It examines conceptual explanations, theoretical foundations, and empirical studies related to accounting information and organizational performance. The chapter also discusses the importance of accounting information in economic development, particularly within business organizations such as Nigerian Bottling Company. (Horngren, Sundem and Elliott, 2013; Meigs and Meigs, 2014).
Accounting information is a critical resource for organizational management because it provides reliable data used in planning, controlling, and decision-making. Without accurate accounting information, organizations may experience inefficiency, poor performance, and financial mismanagement. (Drury, 2015).
2.1 Preamble / Introduction
Accounting information plays a central role in modern organizations by providing financial data that supports decision-making and performance evaluation. It is the responsibility of accountants to ensure that financial information is properly recorded, analyzed, and reported for effective management use. (Pandey, 2015).
The role of accountants has evolved beyond traditional bookkeeping to include strategic financial management, performance evaluation, and advisory functions. This makes accounting information an essential tool for organizational development and economic growth. (Adeniji, 2018).
Organizations depend on accounting information to assess profitability, control costs, evaluate investments, and ensure compliance with financial regulations. (IASB, 2021).
2.2 Theoretical / Conceptual Framework
This study is anchored on key accounting and management theories that explain the role of accounting information in organizational development.
Agency Theory
Agency theory explains the relationship between managers (agents) and owners (principals). Accounting information reduces information asymmetry between both parties and ensures accountability in financial reporting. (Jensen and Meckling, 1976).
This theory suggests that accounting information should be useful for decision-making purposes. It emphasizes relevance and reliability of financial information in improving organizational performance. (IASB, 2021).
Stewardship Theory
Stewardship theory argues that managers act in the best interest of the organization, and accounting information helps them achieve organizational goals efficiently. (Donaldson and Davis, 1991).
Conceptual Framework
The conceptual relationship in this study shows that:
Independent Variable: Accounting Information / Accountantβs Role
Dependent Variable: Organizational Economic Development
Accounting information influences organizational performance through budgeting, cost control, financial reporting, and decision-making processes. (Horngren et al., 2013).
2.3 Current Literature Based on the Variables
Accounting information is widely recognized as a key driver of organizational performance and economic development. Studies show that organizations with strong accounting systems tend to perform better financially due to improved decision-making and control systems. (Meigs and Meigs, 2014).
Accountants contribute to organizational success by preparing accurate financial statements that reflect the true financial position of the business. These statements help management identify strengths and weaknesses in operations. (Drury, 2015).
In manufacturing organizations such as Nigerian Bottling Company, accountants play a vital role in cost control, budgeting, and performance evaluation, which directly influence profitability and growth. (Pandey, 2015).
Accounting information also supports investment decisions by providing financial data that helps management evaluate the viability of projects and business expansions. (Adeniji, 2018).
Poor accounting information, on the other hand, leads to wrong decisions, financial mismanagement, and reduced organizational performance. (Horngren et al., 2013).
2.4 The Need for Accounting Information in the Economy
Accounting information is essential for both organizational and national economic development. It provides the foundation for financial planning, resource allocation, and economic decision-making. (IASB, 2021).
At the organizational level, accounting information helps managers monitor performance, control costs, and ensure efficient use of resources. This improves productivity and profitability. (Drury, 2015).
At the national level, accounting information contributes to economic development by supporting taxation, investment planning, and financial regulation. Governments rely on accurate financial reports to design economic policies. (Pandey, 2015).
Accounting information also enhances transparency and accountability in business operations, reducing corruption and financial mismanagement. (Meigs and Meigs, 2014).
In organizations such as Nigerian Bottling Company, accounting information ensures efficient production planning, cost control, and financial sustainability, which contributes to overall economic development. (Horngren et al., 2013).
2.5 Summary of Literature Review
The literature reviewed shows that accounting information plays a significant role in organizational and economic development. It supports decision-making, improves performance, and enhances accountability in organizations.
Theoretical frameworks such as agency theory, decision usefulness theory, and stewardship theory all emphasize the importance of accounting information in reducing information asymmetry and improving organizational efficiency. (Jensen and Meckling, 1976; IASB, 2021).
Empirical studies also confirm that organizations with strong accounting systems perform better financially and operationally compared to those with weak accounting systems.
However, challenges such as poor accounting practices, inadequate skilled personnel, and weak financial systems can reduce the effectiveness of accounting information in organizations.
