AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION NEEDS OF FARMERS IN TELFARIA PRODUCTION AND MARKETING IN ENUGU NORTH AGRICULTURAL ZONE OF ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study investigated the agricultural extension needs of farmers in Telfaria (fluted pumpkin, Telfairia occidentalis) production and marketing in the Enugu North Agricultural Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to describe the socio-economic characteristics of Telfaria farmers; examine the current production and marketing practices; determine the level of knowledge and adoption of improved Telfaria production technologies; assess the farmers’ perceived extension needs in production and marketing; analyze the factors influencing these extension needs; and identify the constraints faced by farmers in Telfaria production and marketing. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 180 Telfaria farmers from the zone. Primary data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, an Extension Needs Index (ENI), a multiple regression model, and a Likert-type scale. The findings revealed that the majority of the farmers were women, married, and literate, with Telfaria serving as a significant source of household income. The most critical extension needs identified were in the areas of integrated pest and disease management, the use of improved high-yielding varieties, and modern marketing techniques. The regression analysis showed that age, education, farm size, access to credit, and membership in farmer organizations were significant determinants of the level of extension needs. The major constraints identified were lack of access to credit, high cost of inputs, pest and disease infestations, and poor market access. The study concluded that there is a significant unmet demand for agricultural extension services focused on improving both the productivity and profitability of Telfaria farming. It was recommended that extension services should be strengthened and re-oriented to address the specific needs of Telfaria farmers, with a focus on integrated pest management, improved varieties, and market linkages.
Chapter One – Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Agriculture remains the cornerstone of the Nigerian economy, serving as the primary source of livelihood for the majority of the rural population. It is fundamental to food security, employment generation, and the supply of raw materials to industries. Within the agricultural sector, vegetable production holds a position of particular importance due to its high nutritional value, short gestation period, and potential for high returns per unit area. Vegetables are essential components of a balanced diet, providing vital micronutrients that are often lacking in staple-based diets. (Food and Agriculture Organization [FAO], 2021).
Telfairia, commonly known as fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis), is a highly prized leafy vegetable that is indigenous to West Africa, particularly Nigeria. It is a member of the Cucurbitaceae family and is grown for its edible leaves and seeds. The leaves, which are rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals, are a staple ingredient in the traditional cuisine of the South-Eastern and South-South regions of Nigeria. The crop is deeply embedded in the cultural and culinary traditions of the Igbo people, who often refer to it as “Ugu.” (Odiaka, Akoroda, and Odiaka, 2019).
The economic importance of Telfaria cannot be overstated. It is a major source of income for many rural and peri-urban households, particularly women, who are often the primary cultivators and marketers of the crop. Its short production cycle and high market demand make it a lucrative enterprise. The cultivation of Telfaria provides a steady stream of income throughout the year, as it can be grown both during the rainy and dry seasons. The income generated is used by households to meet a variety of needs, including food, education, and healthcare. (Okoli and Nwosu, 2020).
Enugu State, located in the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria, is a major hub for Telfaria production. The Enugu North Agricultural Zone, which encompasses the Nsukka area, is particularly renowned for its cultivation of this valuable crop. The agro-ecological conditions of the zone, characterized by a humid tropical climate and fertile soils, are highly favorable for Telfaria growth. The crop is a common sight in farms, gardens, and backyards across the zone, and it is a central component of the local food system and economy. (Enugu State Agricultural Development Programme [ESADEP], 2020).
Despite its importance, the productivity of Telfaria farming is often constrained by a range of factors. Farmers face challenges related to the use of low-yielding traditional varieties, the prevalence of pests and diseases, soil fertility depletion, and the use of outdated agronomic practices. Furthermore, the marketing of the produce is often inefficient, with farmers lacking access to market information and adequate storage facilities, leading to post-harvest losses and lower prices. These challenges limit the potential income of Telfaria farmers. (Ogbonna and Nwosu, 2021).
The role of agricultural extension services is critical in addressing these challenges. Agricultural extension is an educational process that aims to transfer knowledge, skills, and technologies from research institutions to farmers, empowering them to improve their productivity and livelihoods. Effective extension services are essential for bridging the gap between scientific research and farm-level practice. They provide farmers with the information and training they need to adopt improved technologies and management practices. (Van den Ban and Hawkins, 2018).
A needs-based approach to extension is widely recognized as best practice. This approach involves systematically identifying the specific problems and constraints faced by farmers, and then designing extension programs that directly address these needs. It is a shift away from a top-down, supply-driven model towards a more participatory, demand-driven one. By focusing on the expressed needs of farmers, extension services can be more relevant, effective, and responsive. A key step in this process is the conduct of a needs assessment. (Garforth and Lawrence, 2019).
The concept of an “extension need” refers to a gap between a farmer’s current level of knowledge, skill, or practice and the desired or optimal level needed to achieve a specific goal, such as increased productivity or profitability. The identification of extension needs is the first and most crucial step in the extension program planning cycle. Without a clear understanding of what farmers need to learn, extension programs risk being irrelevant and ineffective. This study is therefore designed to systematically assess the extension needs of Telfaria farmers. (Van den Ban and Hawkins, 2018).
The measurement of extension needs can be done through various methods, including surveys, focus group discussions, and participatory rural appraisal. An Extension Needs Index (ENI) is a composite measure that can be constructed from farmers’ responses to questions about their perceived level of need for information and training in a range of specific technical areas. This index provides a quantitative measure of the overall need and allows for comparison across different areas and different groups of farmers. (Garforth and Lawrence, 2019).
The determinants of extension needs are multi-faceted. The socio-economic characteristics of the farmer, such as age, gender, education, and income, can influence their access to information and their perceived needs. The size of the farm, the production system used, and the farmer’s previous experience with extension services can also play a role. For example, a more educated farmer may have different information needs than a less educated one. Understanding these determinants is essential for targeting extension services to the farmers who need them most. (Adebayo, Oladele, and Sanusi, 2021).
The marketing of Telfaria presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. The crop is highly perishable, with the leaves wilting quickly after harvest. This perishability necessitates a fast and efficient marketing system. The major marketing channels include local rural markets, urban wholesale markets, and direct sales to restaurants and hotels. The price received by the farmer is influenced by a range of factors, including the quality of the leaves, the season, and the bargaining power of the farmer. A lack of market information often puts farmers at a disadvantage. (Okoli and Nwosu, 2020).
This study is therefore designed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the agricultural extension needs of Telfaria farmers in the Enugu North Agricultural Zone. It will identify the key areas where farmers need information and training, both in production and marketing, and it will analyze the factors that influence these needs. The study will also examine the constraints faced by farmers. This will provide the evidence needed to design more effective and targeted extension programs. (Emmanuel and Okafor, 2022).
The findings of this study are expected to be of significant value to a wide range of stakeholders. For policymakers and extension agencies, the study will provide a clear roadmap for improving extension service delivery to Telfaria farmers. For developmentorganizations, the study will inform the design of projects that support vegetable farmers. For the farmers themselves, the study will provide an opportunity for their voices to be heard and their needs to be articulated. Ultimately, the study aims to contribute to the development of a more productive, profitable, and sustainable Telfaria industry. (World Bank, 2022).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Telfaria farming is a vital economic activity in Enugu North Agricultural Zone, providing income and nutrition for thousands of households. The core problem is that the productivity and profitability of this enterprise are significantly constrained by a gap between farmers’ current practices and the best available technologies and management strategies. This gap is largely attributable to the ineffective delivery of agricultural extension services, which have failed to adequately address the specific needs of Telfaria farmers. (ESADEP, 2020).
A fundamental problem is the lack of a systematic assessment of the extension needs of Telfaria farmers. Extension programs are often designed and implemented based on general assumptions about farmers’ needs, rather than on empirical evidence. The problem is that this “one-size-fits-all” approach is ineffective, as the specific needs of Telfaria farmers may differ significantly from those of farmers growing other crops. The absence of a needs assessment means that extension resources are often misallocated. (Garforth and Lawrence, 2019).
The problem of low yields is a persistent challenge in Telfaria production. Farmers often use traditional, low-yielding varieties and outdated agronomic practices. The problem is that they lack access to improved, high-yielding varieties and the knowledge of optimal planting, spacing, and nutrient management. The adoption of improved production technologies is often low, due to a combination of lack of awareness, high cost, and a lack of access to the necessary inputs. This results in yields that are far below their potential. (Ogbonna and Nwosu, 2021).
The issue of pest and disease infestation is a major constraint on Telfaria production. The crop is susceptible to a range of pests and diseases that can cause significant yield losses. The problem is that many farmers lack the knowledge and resources to manage these outbreaks effectively, often relying on traditional or ineffective methods. The need for training in integrated pest and disease management is therefore likely to be high. (Odiaka et al., 2019).
There is a significant problem with the lack of knowledge about appropriate post-harvest handling and storage techniques. Telfaria leaves are highly perishable, and significant losses occur between harvest and market due to improper handling, packaging, and storage. The problem is that farmers often lack knowledge of simple, low-cost techniques that could extend the shelf life of their produce, such as appropriate harvesting times, the use of cool water, and improved packaging. This leads to reduced income and wasted produce. (Okoli and Nwosu, 2020).
The problem of inefficient marketing is a major constraint on the income of Telfaria farmers. Farmers often lack access to market information, such as prevailing prices in different markets, which puts them at a disadvantage when negotiating with buyers. The problem is that they are often price-takers, forced to accept low prices offered by middlemen. The lack of organized marketing channels and inadequatetransportation further exacerbate this problem. There is a clear need for training in marketing strategies and market access. (Adebayo et al., 2021).
The issue of the weak capacity of the agricultural extension system is a critical underlying problem. The extension-to-farmer ratio in Nigeria is very low, meaning that many farmers receive little or no contact with extension agents. The problem is that this limits the dissemination of information and technology to the farmers who need it most. The extension system is also often underfunded and understaffed, with agents lacking the necessary resources and training to provide effective services. (Van den Ban and Hawkins, 2018).
There is a problem with the lack of a gender-sensitive approach to extension delivery. While both men and women are involved in Telfaria production, their roles, needs, and access to resources may differ. The problem is that extension programs are often not designed to address these gender differences, potentially excluding women or failing to meet their specific needs. Given the prominent role of women in Telfaria farming, a gender-sensitive approach is essential. (Doss, 2018).
The problem of limited access to credit is a major barrier to the adoption of improved technologies. Many of the improved practices recommended for Telfaria production, such as the use of improved seeds, fertilizers, and agrochemicals, require financialinvestment. The problem is that farmers often lack access to the credit needed to make these investments. This financial constraint limits their ability to adopt the technologies that could improve their productivity and income. (ArmendΓ‘riz and Morduch, 2018).
The issue of the lack of farmer organization is a constraint on both production and marketing. Farmers who operate individually have less bargaining power in the market and less access to information and resources. The problem is that the lack of strong farmer groups or cooperatives prevents them from pooling their resources, negotiating collectively, and accessing credit and other services. Training in group formation and cooperative development is therefore a significant need. (World Bank, 2022).

There is a significant problem with the lack of integration between production and marketing research. Research efforts often focus on improving yields without adequately considering the marketability of the produce. The problem is that a farmer may be able to produce a high yield, but if they cannot sell it profitably, the benefit is lost. An integrated approach to extension is needed that addresses both the production and marketing aspects of the enterprise. (Emmanuel and Okafor, 2022).
This study is designed to address these problems by providing a comprehensive, empirical assessment of the agricultural extension needs of Telfaria farmers in the Enugu North Agricultural Zone. It will identify the specific areas where farmers need information and training, analyze the factors that influence these needs, and examine the major constraints they face. The core problem this research aims to solve is the lack of evidence-based understanding needed to design effective, targeted extension programs that can unlock the full potential of the Telfaria industry. (Garforth and Lawrence, 2019).
1.3 Aim of the Study
The aim of this study is to analyze the agricultural extension needs of farmers in Telfaria production and marketing in the Enugu North Agricultural Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The specific objectives of this study are to:
- Describe the socio-economic characteristics of Telfaria farmers in the study area.
- Examine the current production and marketing practices of Telfaria farmers.
- Determine the level of knowledge and adoption of improved Telfaria production technologies.
- Assess the perceived extension needs of farmers in Telfaria production and marketing.
- Analyze the factors influencing the level of extension needs and identify the major constraints.
The following research questions were formulated to guide this study:
- What are the socio-economic characteristics of Telfaria farmers in the Enugu North Agricultural Zone?
- What are the current production and marketing practices of the farmers?
- What is the level of knowledge and adoption of improved Telfaria production technologies?
- What are the perceived extension needs of the farmers in production and marketing?
- What factors significantly influence the level of extension needs and what are the major constraints?
The following null (Hβ) and alternative (Hβ) hypotheses were tested in this study:

1.7 Significance of the Study
This study holds significant value for a wide range of stakeholders. For policymakers and the Enugu State Agricultural Development Programme (ESADEP) , the findings will provide a clear, evidence-based roadmap for improving the delivery of extension services to a key group of farmers. The study will highlight the specific areas of production and marketing where farmers need the most support, enabling the efficient allocation of scarce extension resources. The analysis of the determinants of needs will also help to ensure that extension services are targeted at the farmers who are most in need.
For agricultural extension agents and field workers , this study will provide practical insights into the knowledge gaps and priorities of Telfaria farmers. The findings can inform the content of their training programs and their day-to-day advisory work. The study will also help them to adopt a more demand-driven, client-oriented approach to extension, which is more likely to lead to successful outcomes and farmer satisfaction.
For Telfaria farmers themselves and their communities , the study provides a platform for their needs to be systematically assessed and documented. This ensures that their voices are heard in the planning of agricultural programs. The study’s findings will also empower them to advocate for the specific types of support they require, such as training in pest management or assistance with market access. This can lead to improved productivity, higher incomes, and enhanced livelihoods.
For researchers and academics, this study will contribute to the literature on agricultural extension, needs assessment, and vegetable production in Nigeria. The use of an Extension Needs Index (ENI) provides a robust methodological framework for quantifying needs. The study’s focus on Telfaria, an under-researched but economically important crop, is a valuable contribution. The findings will serve as a benchmark for future research and will inform the development of more effective extension programs.
1.8 Scope of the Study
This study is focused on the agricultural extension needs of farmers in Telfairia (Telfairia occidentalis) production and marketing in the Enugu North Agricultural Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria. The geographical scope covers the local government areas within this zone, including Nsukka, Igbo-Etiti, Uzo-Uwani, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, and Udenu. The study involves farmers who are actively engaged in the cultivation of Telfaria for commercial purposes. The analysis covers the 2022/2023 production season. The study assesses needs in all aspects of the value chain, from production to post-harvest handling and marketing.
1.9 Limitation of the Study
This study is subject to certain limitations. The primary limitation is the reliance on self-reported, recall data, which can be subject to inaccuracies. The measurement of “extension needs” is based on farmers’ self-perception of their needs, which may differ from their actual, objectively assessed needs. The cross-sectional design of the study provides a snapshot of needs at a single point in time and does not capture how needs may evolve over time or in response to changes in the agricultural environment. Furthermore, the study’s focus on a single agricultural zone in one state means that the findings may not be generalizable to other regions with different agro-ecological and socio-economic contexts. Finally, the study does not include a detailed assessment of the capacity of the existing extension system to meet the identified needs.
1.10 Definition of Terms
For the purpose of clarity, the following terms are defined as they are used in this study:
